History

From Huesca a beautiful road (C 1310) leads southeast via Sariñena and Villanueva de Sigena, with the monastery of Sigena (Romanesque church), to enter the valley of the Río Cinca, follow the river downstream and join N II, the main road linking Zaragoza and Lérida. A short distance along this to the left (135km/84mi from Huesca) is the little town of Fraga (alt. 120m/395ft), picturesquely situated above the left bank of the Río Cinca. Its main features of interest are a number of noble mansions and the church of San Pedro, which occupies the site of an earlier mosque; originally Romanesque (12th century), it was later rebuilt.

FRAGA is a town of about 15 000 inhabitants situated in the extreme south eastern corner of the province of Huesca. It is well positioned for travelling to other parts of Spain, the Barcelona – Madrid motorway is accessible from Fraga are there are roads north the Huesca and the Pyrenees and south to Teruel and Valencia. It is located a few kilometres from the province of Lleida (Catalonia) and the province of Zaragoza (Aragon) and as such forms a nexus as a social, cultural, and linguistic meeting point. Historically Fraga has played the role of go-between with Aragon and Catalonia and as a result has a rather special quality of frontier town crossroads where a diversity of cultures coincide and cohabit.
Fraga`s history can be dated back to the Moorish occupation prior to its recon quest in 1239 by the Christian forces although historians surmise that there was a Roman and even a Pre-Roman settlement on the site. A few kms to the north is the 3rd century Roman site of Villa Fortunatus some fine mosaics from which are now exhibited in the museum in Zaragoza.
The town, once famed for its dried figs, is now renowned for its peach, apple and pear orchards. The old town lies on the left bank of the river Cinca which flows south from the Pyrenees joining the Segre and finally the Ebro about 20 km south in Mequinenza .
Fraga is one of the largest municipalities in Spain covering 430sq km including an extensive area of semi –desert steppe in the Montnegre hills. This is an area of special value and interest for naturalists and geologists. Here bird species such as Great and Little Bustard, Dupont’s Lark and Lesser Kestrel are emblematic. The confluence of the three rivers – Segre, Cinca and Ebro about 20 km south of Fraga make it another area of particular interest to ornithologist and anglers alike – the introduced Black Bass which grows to enormous size
